In line with Mental Health Awareness Month, actress Maxene Magalona opened up on the importance of keeping an open communication among the family.
In a lengthy Instagram post, Maxene acknowledged the fact that not all families are comfortable with addressing issues head on.
“It’s #mentalhealthawarenessmonth and my dream is to see more families all over the world practice the art of conscious communication,” she said.
“The sad reality is that most families live in denial and refuse to acknowledge what needs to be discussed, especially when it comes to mental health and healing. Because these issues bring up a lot of awkward and uncomfortable feelings, we tend to just sweep things under the rug and hope they go away instead of actually dealing with them head-on.”
However, when issues are not addressed, Maxene explained that these will pile up and eventually implode.
“No problem ever goes away by just ignoring it. Mental health issues are a natural part of our lives and the sooner we accept and address them as a family, the better we are able to heal and grow together.”
Maxene also added that when families avoid uncomfortable conversations, it creates distance and division among family members.
“We pretend like nothing is wrong and continue to distract ourselves with worldly pleasures. We continue living like this without realizing that we are already drifting apart from one another until the relationships just naturally fizzle out and dissolve.”
She also emphasized the importance of building safe spaces inside homes wherein everyone can practice healthy and honest communication.
“Instead of fighting and shouting at each other, we can choose to talk calmly with love and compassion. Instead of completely ignoring one another, we can pray for our loved ones and hope for the best. Instead of judging and blaming one another, we can take responsibility for our own healing and make the decision to work on ourselves.”
